When you love each other but feel more like housemates than partners, this is where you begin to work out what’s actually going on between you.

When becoming parents brings you closer in some ways and further apart in others, this is a space to make sense of what’s happening between you.

When you've spent years holding it together, this is where you finally get to put some of it down.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, that’s a good place to begin.

Based in Mont Albert NORTH, Melbourne. In-person and online sessions available.

what’s happened to you, and how that continues to shape the way you move through the world.

I take a collaborative approach, working alongside you to make sense of what’s happening and to find a way forward that feels right for you.

I also draw on approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and the Gottman Method to support both individuals and couples.

For individuals, this involves understanding the patterns and experiences that shape how you think, feel, and relate to yourself and others.

For couples, this means understanding the patterns that create distance between you and learning how to move through conflict in a way that helps you feel like you’re both on the same side again.

If something feels off, in yourself or your relationship, that’s a good place to begin.

ABOUT

I came to this work through my own experience of trying to make sense of things that didn’t feel right.

Elaine Tan, counsellor in Mont Albert North, Melbourne

Because of that, what I bring to this work isn’t just training. It’s the lived experience of knowing what it feels like to sit in confusion and pain, in myself and in my relationships.

I have a deep belief that with the right support, things can be different.

This means I start from the understanding that many of the ways we think, feel, and respond make sense when you understand what we’ve been through.

It’s not about “what’s wrong with you,” but

HOW I WORK

At the core of my work is helping you understand the patterns shaping you and your relationships.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Change takes time, and it doesn’t always happen in a straight line.

INITIAL SESSION

We start by getting to know each other and understanding what has brought you here. Sometimes people know exactly where to begin and sometimes, people are unsure. Either is OK as we’ll talk through it together.

At the end of the session, I’ll share my initial thoughts and suggest next steps, so you leave with a clearer sense of direction.

For couples, this will be a space where both of you are heard and we begin to understand what’s happening between you.

UNDERSTANDING PATTERNS

Over time, we explore the experiences and patterns shaping how you think, feel, and relate.

For individuals, this might mean understanding where certain beliefs or responses come from.

For couples, this might mean talking through conflict and beginning to understand the patterns that keep pulling you apart, even when neither of you intends for things to end up that way.

BUILDING TOWARDS CHANGE

As we build understanding, we also focus on what to do differently.

For individuals, this may involve developing new ways of coping, communicating, and relating to yourself and others.

For couples, it involves learning how to communicate more effectively, repair after conflict, and stay connected through challenges.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Not at all. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. If something feels off, that is reason enough.

  • This is more common than you might think. It's worth a conversation about what might make it feel more possible for them. In the meantime, I'd suggest each of you connects with your own individual counsellor and that way, when you're both ready, I can work with you as a couple without either of you wondering whose side I'm on.

If it would help, you can read more about how couples counselling works here.

  • Counselling isn’t one-size-fits-all. The fit between you and your counsellor makes a big difference, and it’s okay if it takes time to find the right one.

  • There’s no pressure to share anything before you’re ready. We go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

  • There’s no fixed timeline. Some people come for a short period, others stay longer. We’ll figure out what feels right for you as we go.
